New to the Genre?! Mysteries

These are books I'd recommend to readers ready to explore a new-to-them genre. These recommendations are chosen to represent variety and celebrate differences. For example, instead of being a recommendation for ten Agatha Christie mysteries, it will represent a wide variety of mysteries--contemporary or classic--that may prove appealing.

Love middle grade fiction? Try Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage.

Love YA? Try April Lindner's Catherine.

Love nonfiction? I'd recommend The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher by Kate Summerscale.

Love science fiction? I'd recommend The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester.

Love Jane Austen? Try Pride and Prescience by Carrie A. Bebris.

Looking for a long series? There are 33 Hercule Poirot mysteries! Agatha Christie's first was The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

Love gothic-inspired romance? Try Georgette Heyer's The Talisman Ring

Enjoy classics? Try Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White.

Love cats? Give Lillian Jackson Braun a try. The first in the series is The Cat Who Could Read Backwards.

Love a little humor? I definitely recommend Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe series. (I just love, love, love Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe!) A good starting place would be Some Buried Caesar.
